On a more positive note, I saw The Bellfurries tonight and they were excellent. If you like the updated Beatle-esqe pop of someone like The Redwalls, I think you'd enjoy this. I heard the drummer used to play with Big Sandy and there is a hint of the Beatles country in the band, but that may be the power of suggestion (or just the fact that roots & country & pop intersect on so many levels). Check them out on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/bellfuries[/quote]

I was at this same show. They played to a packed house at a small neighborhood bar called the Carousel Lounge (http://www.carousellounge.net.) The "Beatles country" label seems quite accurate. They remind a little bit of other artists/bands such as The Derailers, Dwight Yoakam, and maybe even The Mavericks.
People who arrived earlier in the evening and didn't oversleep like Dan *ahem...lol* were fortunate enough to see a new local power pop band called Ripe. Ripe was formed by Jake Garcia (also a guitarist/vocalist in The Ugly Beats and a LOVE cover band, Forever Changes). Filling out the lineup is Chris Branca on bass and vocals, Nick Yaklin on drums, and Nic Armstrong (yep, that would be the guy from Nic Armstrong and The Thieves/IV Thieves). They had a enthusiastic reception on Sat night. In addition to Jake's tunes, they played a few tunes of Nic's (from The Greatest White Liar record) along with a fantastic version of One After 909 with Chris and Nic sharing vocals.
You can hear their tunes at : http://www.myspace.com/ripemusicatx

Cheers,

Jennifer
