Hey All,
So strange. Monday night I was watching the newly released dvd called "All
You Need Is Love" by Tony Palmer from the 70's. It is amazingly brilliant.
Have any of you heard about it? Well, the last thing I watched before
turning in for the night was the "Rhythm & Blues" segment and Bo Diddley was being
interviewed and was talking about how badly he and other artists of the time
got ripped off royally by the music industry. The next day I hear the sad
news that he had died. One of the pioneers for sure.
A quick story to add:
Back in around 1988 I dj'd at a club in Naugatuck, Ct. called The Night
Shift. This club featured many old rock and roll and blues guys and bands like
Sonic Youth, Nirvana(no more than 50 people in the audience), Smashing
Pumpkins (ditto). It was booked by a guy named Fernando Pinto was quite a visionary
for the time. Anyway, Bo Diddley played there one night with this God awful
pick up band. He just showed up with his guitar case and plugged in etc.
So, I was behind him in the dj booth when they were playing "Hey Bo Diddley"
with THAT famous drum beat. The drummer was clueless though. So Bo goes
"Does anybody here know the beat to this song?" and I yelled "YEEEEAAAAHHH". So
I came down from the dj booth and played drums with Bo Diddley. He kept
looking back at me, sweating profusely, with this big smile on his face, his
sherrif badge on his hat and his red, square guitar! How cool is that?!
