I'm loath to in any way stick up for Lefsetz, whom I've always found
useless, but about a year ago, I treated myself to a post-deadline
lunch at the one bar and grill in my neighborhood that doesn't cater
to The Goddamn Students, and while I was sitting at the bar with my
chili dogs and Narragansett, the bartender -- late 20s, female,
semi-hipsterish but not obnoxious about it -- put in a Hall and Oates
greatest hits CD. Not only that, after she asked what I did for a
living, she launched into a fairly long and quite animated monologue
about Hall and Oates, and specifically what a great songwriter Daryl
Hall was. So there's definitely a buzz about them in some circles.
Me, I tend to agree that they were a totally reliable singles
factory -- I'd support a Hall and Oates revival any day over, say, a
Journey revival -- but I still find the production of their '80s
singles so irritatingly gimmicky that listener fatigue sets in after
no more than a couple songs. The '70s stuff like "Sara Smile,"
though...no arguments there.
Blind pig, occasional truffle, etc.
