Hi Auditeers--Sandwiched between the musical goings-on in the desert
(Coachella and Stagecoach festivals) will be the largest FREE festival in
Southern California. The sister campanion to the more amplified Adams Ave.
Street Fair in the fall, this weekend's Adams Avenue Roots Festival in San
Diego showcases several noteworthy acts.

Those of you familiar with writer Richie Unterberger's books on West Coast
folk-rock, "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and "Eight Miles High," may recoginize some
of the following artists.
Larry Murray will be anchoring High, Wide & Handsome at this weekend's
festival. Larry's old group, Hearts and Flowers, released two great psych-
meets- country rock LPs on Capitol in the 60s. Joining Larry will be Ed
Douglas. Larry and Ed originally belonged to the the Scottsville Squirrel
Barkers, a San Diego bluegrass group that once featured a hotshot
17-year-old mandolin player named Chris Hillman. I think we all know what
was his next career move.
Another set worth checking out will be the reunion of Kathy and Carol. If
the idea of two ladies singing in that sweet Everlys school of two-part
harmony sounds appealing, catch their show. In the 60s, they crossed paths
with Jac Holzman, Paul Rothchild, Joan Baez, Hillman, and many others.
Here's Richie's notes from their CD reissue of their 1965 Elektra album:

This is a street fair, which means there will be no shortage of incense
sticks, weeping-Elvis-on-felt-backdrop-paintings, and junk food that meets
state requirements for daily caloric intake.
The fun begins Saturday morning at 10 and runs until Sunday at dusk..
