I'll bite! Just finished one listen.......i'm like you. LOVED their
earlier material......everything up to and including Mesopotania.
And.
This is their best since then, by a long shot.
Ican see why folks would be cynical but come on..it's the B-52s. Nothing to
take too seriously beyond 'does it rock' and 'is it fun?'.
They have modernized, plugged in guitars(!!) and actually rock hard. Hot
Corner is a bit like Elastica(good Elastica, that is).
Guitar sound is sharp, angular and bites down hard. COOL! Since they've
not really done that since their second album and, certainly, since Ricky
died.
It falls short when they forget about the guitars, though.....they have
their techno turns and they pretty much all flat. That's about half the
trax. So if you do'nt want ot drop $14/$15 to check it out all, it reeks
ITUNES.
Where you hear guitars in the first 20 seconds, yr safe. If you don't, you
are not. Except the last track, Keep this Party Going which does not fit
that 'rule', but it a good song. 6 keepers, 2 okay ones, 3 duds.
