I have to admit that sci-fi and fantasy for the most part have nothing of interest for me. 
Give me the real world and the human condition... but to my way of thinking 
Arthur C.Clarke transcended his genre the same way that Chet Atkins does. 
(I.E. you don't have to be a country music fan to get Chet's genius.) 

I never read a Clarke book I didn't like. 

R.I.P. to one of the real gems of our lifetime.
