Scotland Yard Gospel Choir are definitely worth
checking out, both the first album (I Bet You Say That
to All the Boys) and the current, self-titled one.
Somewhere between catchy indie chamber pop and
shambling folk-pop/rock, they've been plagued by
comparisons to Belle & Sebastian from the start. A
few songs definitely merit that comparison (along with
a well-known friendship between Elia Einhorn and
Stuart Murdoch), but they've grown way beyond that.
The first album is a bit different sounding from the
second, primarily because the band started out with
two singers/songwriters. Matt Kerstein left the group
after the first record (just when a really big buzz
had been developing around them) and formed his own
group, Brighton, MA. This eliminated a bit of the
split personality you hear on IBYSTTATB. His project
is also worth checking out:

And a nicer bunch of guys (and girls) you'll never
find. Not only have Elia and co played a number of
benefit shows I've produced, they played my wedding
(in fact, it was the last show Kerstein played with
them)!
I'd also recommend giving a check to another orch-pop
band from Chicago, good friends of SYGC (they
sometimes share some members), Canasta:

Don't neglect to check out "Slow Down Chicago." It's
a few years old now, but a great, catchy anthem for my
city. "This town -- it breathes on its own!"
