Here are my quick impressions on some new things that I've bought or received in the mail recently:
I'm spinning the new Goldbergs album, and this is a rock solid album. This is classic '60s inspired light power pop, with Andy Goldberg's songwriting progressing quite well.
The new Lackloves album has Mike Jarvis fronting a trio. Much like Tommy Keene, it doesn't matter who Jarvis, works with (in this case, a brand new rhythm section) -- any way you slice it, it comes up Lackloves. Which means a unique blend of '50s and '60s influences, with some bits of psychedelia, which I think are contractually mandated by Rainbow Quartz.
I don't know if The Afternoons have been mentioned much on Audities, but if you like swoony British pop a la The Housemartins/Beautiful South, the lighter side of Astrid and such, these guys (and gal) are simply ace. Singer Richard Griffiths is very compelling and the band adds some subtle new wrinkles into their sound.
And, on a less poppy tip, I've also been digging the new British Sea Power (they now churn out powerful anthems routinely), MGMT (the Flaming Lips get a little funky?), and Bob Mould.
Oh -- the new Kelley Stoltz is really nice too.
And I still need to sift through some new Pop Boomerang stuff.
