Yep, because the same thing happened on my Toshiba. All the diagnostics said
everything was working perfectly but no sound from speakers or headphones.

Almost spent $65 for some diagnostic work at Circuit City (where I bought it
18 months back) but the two guys behind the counter kept contradicting each
other and it appeared they had no idea what they were talking about ("So
what do I get for $65?"..."Everything"..."You mean the charge includes the
cost of repairs?"..."Yep, we check it out, find the problem and then fix
it"..."OK, sounds good"..."OK, so we'll fill this out and then we'll call
you with the estimate in a couple of days"..."Huh? You said repairs were
included?"..."Oh. no, sorry. That's extra. Plus
shipping"..."Shipping?"..."Yeah. We don't work on Toshibas"...)

Long story short - I came home and plugged the headphone jack in and it
worked. I pulled the jack out and the speakers cranked.

<drum roll please....>

Loose connection in the headphone jack. Try wiggling the plug.

cheers
b
