Very early Ambrosia was how I likes my prog.

Saw them in Hartford, 1975, opening for the (post-"Endless Summer", but
pre-rehab, it's fair to say) Beach Boys and supporting the debut LP (the one
with "Holdin' on to Yesterday" and "Nice Very Nice"). Liked 'em, even more
so when their encore was an a capella run-through of Gene Chandler's "Duke
of Earl."

Saw them in year and a half later opening a triple-bill with Rory Gallagher
and Dave Mason. That time around was behind the "Somewhere I've Never
Travelled" LP. Might have been good. Hard to tell, the sound was way loud,
even for the Hartford Civic Center. Didn't serve them well at all.

I saw Ambrosia open for Styx back in 75 or 76, right after Tommy Shaw
joined. Second row center at the Paramount in Portland. Great show
overall; Styx before they got bloated, and Ambrosia was better than I
expected - closed the set with a rocking Magical Mystery Tour.

I love Ambrosia, but I've never thought of them as power pop.

I love them too. In fact, the only other list that I'm on is Ambrosia's
"Travellers" (although that's near dormant these days). I think the
closest they came to power pop was parts of ONE EIGHTY, with the trio of
songs that start that album - "Ready", "Shape I'm In" and "Kamikaze".
That album is my favorite of theirs - just edging out their self-titled
debut. I put "Shape I'm In" on a SOTT a few years back.

They are headlining a prog-rock festival called RoSFest in May here in
the Philadelphia area, and I'm looking forward to that. David Pack has
left the group, but I've always enjoyed Joe Puerta's songs just as much.
I think they are an underrated, overlooked band - mostly because of
their big MOR hits "You're the Only Woman" and "Biggest Part of Me",
also both from ONE EIGHTY. I've only seen them once, about 10 years
ago, right before Pack left, and they put on a very good show.

np - SHOW WORLD - Redd Kross (kinda forgot about this one, but was just
browsing SSA and saw it's entry and popped it on. I forgot how much I
  liked this.)
