I guess that's just what I don't understand (or that I just don't pick
up on). Cool by me doing things tongue-in-cheek. But without a wink or a
nod letting everyone in on the joke, then is it a joke? 

Based on the video I watched, the entire crowd was eating up the shtick
hand-over-fist.

Add in an overall sense -- from both performer and audience -- of 
"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!  I'm so SENSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!  No one 
UNDERSTANDS meeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!  Everything sucks and it's ALL 
YOUR FAULT!!!!!!!!!" and hey presto, you got emo.
