I like Amy Winehouse - can't believe the absolute plummet from the
heights of last year's
Midem and then SXSW to her current troubles but the Grammy slot was
cool... at certain points,
her facial expressions were like early Jagger... I hope she finds her
way through all the mess...
I like her songs and Back to Black is one of the almost perfect
albums (the UK version has an extra track and a new Deluxe UK version
has a bunch of extra tracks that had been floating online for a
while, including a great version of Cupid). She has gone out of her
way to reference all the obvious references and if it sends folks
into the back catalogue bins - awesome! That's what the first Stones
album did.
Maybe this is all she'll ever have but what an iconic album to have.
And no, the Daptones without Amy Winehouse are not as interesting,
sorry, as much as I REALLY wanted to like the Daptones album (altho,
i did like their Dylan track - not really a remix but Bob's vocals
over new bedtracks).
Amy Winehouse is very Britcentric and some of the album's lyrics are
pretty funny. The Brits have always
thrown back our own music back at us for rediscovery - it's
incredible all the COOL soul and mod reissues that are EASILY
available over there for CHEAP. That is the difference - in the UK &
France, you are constantly being educated to what's new and also to
the best of the past - everybody knows music there.
Just troll through the BBC radio site - all the amazing documentaries
and iconic stars hosting shows (Paul Jones has a great blues show,
for example)...
The UK is in the throes of girl power - I like the new Kate Nash and
looking forward to the debut lp from Duffy. I should have bought
Adele, maybe, it was everywhere. I like Candie Payne but she's not
the new Amy like some folks are hyping.
walking into a UK record store is like walking into an electrical
field - your mind is blown every 5 seconds... there's so much amazing
music there... ah, but maybe I'm biased... hahahhaaaaaa...
flame on!
