Mike Bennett:
Thanks for the back-up. You've finally nailed what's been bugging me about
these anti-Winehouse posts. All of them have been blithe dismissals without
any explanation.
Maybe Ms. Winehouse will succumb to the "Best New Artist Curse" (I'm still
chagrined at the way it consumed the amazing Shelby Lynne), or, maybe she'll
build a lasting career. Personally, I'm hoping for the latter.
I happen to think Winehouse has a great voice, and a really distinctive and
individual look -- something that's sorely missing from most of the
cookie-cutter pop now cluttering the charts. I downloaded a live set of hers
recorded in London last year, and I've not been able to stop listening to
it.
I think it's mostly because, when she's on, Winehouse (like any great
singer) goes deep to wring the emotion from her songs. And, if you listen to
the lyrics, it's also clear that she's not afraid to stare deeply into the
mirror to find her material. That kind of introspection is a rare courage.
You can whack her all you want for the Girl Group shtick. But to me, it
seems like she's paying homage and more than she's ripping it off. And for a
list full of Beatles apologists, the fact that she's getting stick for
mining the past strikes me as hilarious.

That's just my 2 cents.

Michael --

Your post seems to feed into John's point. Almost every negative post I've
read on Audities about Amy Winehouse has been a quick putdown. I've never
read anyone who has explained why she is not worthwhile.

While her live performances swing wildly, on disc, I think she's a fantastic
singer -- her tone, her phrasing, her range -- all terrific. She truly
engages with her material. Moreover, she's an ace songwriter, with lyrics
that are sometimes witty and often quite perceptive.
