A friend and I both went for the $100 / 25-cd package Pat was selling a
couple of years ago to finance a recording. I doubt I've gotten through 5
discs but there's amazing stuff there and I really did it because it seemed
like a nice investment to a guy who has usually delivered. $100/month? I
wouldn't do that for Ray Davies. If Herman Brood came back from the dead I
wouldn't do it.
But I will tell you this about Pat. That same friend has been buying some
one-off things from him, and once got a 3-cd set of something where one of
the discs was bad. He asked Pat how to get a replacement, and Pat
overnighted an entire new set PLUS sent him a couple of personalized CDRs of
some new demos (and a few other trinkets)...with a letter of apology! Now
granted, he wants my pal to remain a good customer. But had he fired off a
replacement disc regular mail he would have been a stand-up guy. Instead, he
went above and beyond and apologized "for the inconvenience".
I feel bad for those who got their bells rung on these subscription deals.
Usually the person doing it has all best intentions, but we're talking about
musicians here...unless they have someone running their website and business
for them, there are going to be bumps in the road, whether time, financial
or both.
YMMV,
