I think, Josh, that - like most of anybody's favorites - much has to do with the "when and where". When did you first hear the album? Where were you in your life journey when you first heard it? I love the first Beat LP. I got it when it was released ('79?) and played the crap out of it. Wanna Meet The Scruffs is one of my all time favorites, and I bought it when it was originally a regional release on vinyl back in 1978 or whenever. Same can be said of Black Vinyl Shoes. On the flip side, I like the Raspberries, but I don't love them. I think one of the reasons there is that I "discovered" them 5 or 6 years after they quit being an active band.
I absolutely love those 3 lp's. If I were to hear them today for the first time, my reaction would probably be considerably different, not unlike yours. Maybe that's a sad statement into my current emotional state of affairs, or maybe it's a reflection of the fact that what was once semi-fresh (or at least not too far removed from it's origins) is now fairly standard. I dunno....
Anyway, I'd bet your reaction is a lot more commonplace than we'd like to admit.
Greg
