I guess the skinny tie thing itself doesn't work for me. Maybe I'll have to 
give it time.  Some stuff that passed for New Wave at the time-- like Elvis 
Costello, Nick Lowe-- now just sounds like rock'n'roll (or pop) to me; that 
is to say, it doesn't sound dated.  But even calling a record "skinny tie" 
sort of places it in the context of a time, as opposed to timeless.  I'm not 
much for, say, "Making Plans for Nigel," but I love Skylarking.  I hear 
Nigel, I think of-- well, guys in skinny ties.

I'll admit, I'm surprised to see you cite The Beat -- I think that's one of 
the best skinny tie pop records ever.  Collins had a bunch of great songs at 
his disposal and the band plays them with punch and panache.
