I don't understand the backlash and hating, either. She's got an amazing voice. I've played her amazing cover of The Zutons "Valerie" every time I've filled in on Craig Leve's Snap, Crackle Pop radio show for nearly a year, because it's brilliant. I had an early copy of Back To Black, and sought out Frank because of it. I don't like Frank as much, but there's no denying she's a talent and force with which to be reckoned.
So what if she's a train wreck at the moment? That doesn't change my attitude toward her music. Keith Richards snorts his family members, and I still think he's a great guitarist.
On another note, someone mentioned Duffy earlier. I would like to second that recommendation. I could have sworn I mentioned her some time back (around the first time Nicole Atkins came up, I think ), but that could have been another list of trainspotters altogether. My current song obsession of hers is "Distant Dreamer," there's something there that gives me a Ronnie Spector vibe. I fear she will get "She's-jumping-the-Winehouse-trend," when Rockferry hits the states, though (She doesn't have anything near the voice, but the northern soul-meets-girl group style will draw comparisons.). However, she's worth a listen if you're at all into that sound.

I'm sorry, but Lady Day fixation aside, there's absolutely no denying that she had a voice to be reckoned with, coupled with a powerful mix of brashness and sophistication. Track down a live recording of her from this period and I just can't believe you wouldn't be impressed with the genuine talent, whether you like her music or not.
