Bob --

One of the points that you make in the post below is correct -- the fact that someone does not like something that you like, and expresses this opinion, shouldn't change your own opinion. But when fellow music fans gather together in a forum for insanely great pop, the only way the forum can thrive is if people express their opinions. Sometimes that's done in the form of a list.

But the fact that someone takes the time to jot off 5 or 10 or 20 albums or artists that they dig, or just one, isn't necessarily a form of self-absorbed one-upsmanship. It's just a method of communication. I certainly feel that everyone's year end lists often serve to jog memories or identify releases that people may not have know about it.

Yes, from time to time, there are disagreements. More often than not, they are civil -- someone just pointing out why they don't like something, or something they think is similar or like better. Often, other people chime in to agree. I can't say that anyone who disagreed about something that I like has changed my mind. But I know that I've bought dozens upon dozens of CDs based on posts from others on this list. And if the disagreement gets heated, it's because somebody is passionate about the topic. I'll admit that sometimes I've flown off the handle when someone knocks what I like, and I've argued as vehemently as when talking about political subjects. Maybe music isn't as important as the Iraq war, for example, but both can arouse my ire.

Moreover, what's wrong with a little ego gratification? The average Auditeer is a much bigger music fan than most folks. I'm sure a lot of Auditeers don't have a whole lot of friends in their immediate circle to discuss these topics and praise this music. Maybe this is some sort of pathetic need for validation. But I think it's something much better than that. It's built on sharing knowledge about a subject that we are all passionate about.

What's most depressing about your post is that it implicitly says that the entire purpose of this list is pointless. If folks didn't post about what music they liked, and sometimes agreed and sometimes disagreed, I think about all we could post here would be You Tube links, tour dates and release dates.

Finally, tying this to your prior post, what many take issue with is not that you have a differing opinion. It's how you express your opinion. It's one thing to disagree with someone (or apparently a large percentage of people on the list). But when you express that disapproval in a condescending tone that shouts, "hey you guys, you're all shitheads," it's neither fun nor provocative. And then to act like you are so wise and those who complain about your incessantly negative and unkind posts are the stupid ones doesn't really help one bit.
