Your take on this album is just about the same as mine, but I think I
rate the ones on either side of it a bit higher than you do: I love I
TRAWL THE MEGAHERTZ, especially the simply gorgeous title track, one
of the few 20+ minute songs on my iPod, and ANDROMEDA HEIGHTS is
second only to TWO WHEELS GOOD/STEVE McQUEEN in my personal Prefab
pantheon: my first listen to the title track elicited genuine tears of
joy, and I still mist up a touch when I hear it.
Honestly, after being so brutally disappointed by FROM LANGLEY PARK TO
MEMPHIS (even the handful of songs I like on that album are simply
ruined by the awful production) after the one-two punch of SWOON and
TWO WHEELS GOOD (probably the album I listened to the most start to
finish in high school, or at least up there with Lloyd Cole's
RATTLESNAKES and the Smithereens' ESPECIALLY FOR YOU), I think it's
probably pretty close to impossible for me to ever be disappointed in
a Paddy McAloon album again: I simply don't see him ever doing
anything as bad as "Hey Manhattan" again, you know?
