I know there are a few other fans besides me out there, and I wouldn't
have known he had anything new coming out had I not gone to his website in
search of unrelated information, so I thought I'd share what I know,
because it's complicated:
He has a new album, Between the Beautifuls, out in Canada this week. It's
widely Canadian-ly available, but I didn't find a better deal than they
have on his website (http://www.hawksleyworkman.com, surprisingly). I've
had this for a couple days and would definitely recommend it; tracks 3-5
worried me a bit by sounding very commercial-sensitive-singer-songwriter
all in a row, but HOLY CRAP does it rally after that.
Word on the streets is that an early version was rejected by the label; I
blame that for the stuff I don't like being there, which sounds vaguely
delusional of me until you try to imagine the label saying, "Take this
away and don't come back until you've got some glam rock, some country
gospel, and maybe something that sounds like Prince circa Around The World
In A Day," which is the other possibility as I see it.
Rejected album would also explain why he has a completely different
release, Los Manlicious, coming out in Germany in the near future. His
management uses some careful-sounding language about different markets
liking different things, but you and I both know what they're getting at:
sounds more like David Hasselhoff. RIGHT?
There's a package of 3 downloadable b-sides available at his site for the
totally reasonable MP3 price of $5.99 (?!?), which I paid anyway and am
glad I did.
There is ALSO a bonus track available only if you buy BtB from iTunes
Canada, which most of us are not in a position to do, but maybe you know
someone who will email you a drm-free copy of it (hint: you do).
And as far as I know, that's all.
