In this case, you're absolutely right. Newbury is really ripping off
their customers. I believe the EP and CD costs are the same.
That being said, a lot of the vinyl coming out these days is priced
higher than their CD counterparts and that's the label's doing. Because
1) strike while the iron is hot and 2) print runs for vinyl is pretty
small, so labels' costs per unit aren't what they're like for CDs. On a
side note, over 5% of Wilco's latest were made up of vinyl sales. While
5% ain't a huge percentage, I think it's pretty impressive with what
Wilco's sales figures for Sky Blue Sky and it's 2008.

Okay, first off, he's a rapper, not a DJ. But not only are there
people who still put out vinyl, but there's still those of us who
listen to things on vinyl. I regularly buy new vinyl repressings of
old LPs at Twisted Village in Harvard Square: yeah, I could buy the
first Electric Prunes album on CD, but do I really need bonus tracks
that are almost certainly going to be either lame or redundant?
My only problem is that a lot of stores have identified the vinyl
market as being somewhat fetishistic, so there's silliness like
Beirut's LON GISLAND EP costing $16.99 on vinyl and $7.99 on CD at
Newbury Comics. I don't love vinyl enough to pay that much of a
premium for it, especially not for a minor release like that.
But if, say, a band's got their new album on both vinyl and CD at the
merch table and they're within a buck or two in price, I'm almost
certainly going to buy the LP.
