Between downpours this past weekend, I made my first trip in a few
years to Amoeba in San
Fran, while the spousal unit stimulated the economy at any number of
Union Square stores.
I found some very nice stuff - soft pop reissues, some vinyl and
two-buck clearance gems,
but the absolute winner was an advance copy of Eric Matthews upcoming
new release
"The Imagination Stage". Here finally is a record that stands up to
and surpasses at times
"The Lateness Of The Hour". I've only heard it once through, but the
cut "Radio Boy" actually
gave me goosebumps during the morning commute. The promo cover gave no
credits but
from a review I found on the net it appears it's a true solo effort.
Matthews is more a composer
and arranger than songwriter, tho he appears to be exerting more
effort to create "songs".
But I love the way a measure or two of Bacharach styling gives way to
patent Matthews'
slightly minor discordances, then off to somewhere else, and am less
concerned with
songcraft than others might be.
According to Amazon the release date is March 4. Glad to see his
record company has
laid some good groundwork with a number of positive advance reviews.
