Yea.
I still remember the first time I saw the video for
"Island in the Sun" on MTV in, like, 1984 (never saw
it again LOL); here's this simplistic, relatively
straight-ahead power-pop song and then, suddenly,
Yngwie's
totally-out-of-place-but-nonetheless-thrilling guitar
solo (take that, guitar solo haters!).
As a metal-head at the time -- oh, okay, so I still
am, sue me -- I found Yngwie's fretboard prowess to be
inspiring. Of course, after he released what seemed
like dozens of solo albums that all featured exactly
the same pentatonic mile-a-second runs, I grew board.
The thing about Alcatrazz that killed it for me was
the vocalist, Graham Bonnet; I'm certainly not a snob
when it comes to vocal stylings, but damned if this
guy didn't ruin the songs for me with his over-the-top
screeching. Strange, because the man is well-respected
among many metal/rock musicians, at least from what
I've heard.
Wheedle-y wheedle-y wheee!
