Hello everyone,

Finally getting a chance to sit down and get this list off to Mike
(thanks Mike!). Besides my top 20, I'm also listing my top10 from
actual 12" LP's that I was fortunate enough to purchase in 2007 (I
bought around 30 altogether)! I've tried to add a little blurb about my
some of my selections, but I have never been accused of being a good
reviewer, so don't expect much more than some info about the CD/LP.

1) David Fagin - For Promotional Use Only (Noshpit) - if you like
the Rosenbergs, I think you'll like this as well. David wrote and sang
many of their songs. Josh the bass player is even on this solo release.
Still recall the excellent house concert they put on at Ira's house a
few years ago!

2) Steve Bertrand - Pain Is a Megaphone (Iconsole) - if you like
the Tories, I think you'll like this as well. Some of the songs have
hooks that hit you the first time and you can't forget them. Maybe a
little more somber than the Tories, but I like it!

3) Frisbie - New Debut (Appendix) - I really liked their first one
and this is just as strong (maybe stronger). My personal favorite song
is S.F.B. (So F**king Beautiful)

4) John Hoskinson - Pancho Fatastico (Tallboy) - another excellent
disc from this artist

5) Ian Hunter - Shrunken Heads (Yep Roc) - Ian can still sing and
sing well. Gives hope to all the "youngsters"!

6) The Red Button - She's About to Cross My Mind (self released)

7)       Lolas - Like the Sun (JAM) - another great disc from the Lolas;
buy this one and you don't need to buy the import only Doctor Apache!

8) Afternoons - Baby, You Know the Deal (Rock Indiana)

9) Maple Mars - Beautiful Mess (Kool Kat)

10) Dollyrots - Because I'm Awesome (Blackheart) - not as good as
their first one, but pretty darn good (check out the amped up version of
"Brand New Key"!)

11)   I-94 - Control (self released) - bringing the rock to power pop;
available mainly at cdbaby

12) Future Clouds & Radar - s/t (Star Apple)

13) Charlotte Hatherley - The Deep Blue (Little Sister) - didn't hear
the Ash CD from 2007, but their ex-guitarist put out a pretty cool solo
disc. Bought this disc on my four-hour visit to Amoeba in San
Francisco. That's about all I saw of San Francisco, but it left a
pleasant memory!

14) Pipettes - We Are the Pipettes (Memphis Industries) - bought the
import CD and liked it so much I bought the 12" LP when it was released
in America this fall.

15) Bobby Sutliff - On a Ladder (Paisley Pop) - another winner from
Bobby. Keep 'em coming!

16) Fountains of Wayne - Traffic and Weather (Virgin)

17) Mellowmen - Tomorrow's Sound Today (Rainbow Quartz)

18) Tammany Hall Machine - Amateur Saw (self released)

19) Robert Plant/Alison Krauss - Raising Sand (Rounder) - who would
have ever guessed this would be a duo?

20) Abra Moore - On the Way (Sarathan) - previous member of Poi Dog
Pondering, Abra has put out several astounding CD's (at least IMHO). I
drove to the Jersey Shore (three hours) to see Abra play a 45 minute set
in a Barnes & Noble. As I was having her sign the CD, I told her I
drove three hours and her first comment was "hope we played long
enough"! She did (her support guitarist was Will Sexton, ex-Will and
the Kill) and I played her CD the entire three hour trip back home. A
wonderful evening of music!

Bubbling under are CD's by Graham Parker, Matt Nathanson, Mandy Moore,
Kelly Willis, Pierces, Wheat and You Am I. If they had not been
ineligible, I would have found room in my top 20 for Nelson Bragg and
Sloan.

As for my favorite LP's:

1) Pipettes - We Are the Pipettes (Memphis Industries)

2) Robert Plant/Alison Krauss - Raising Sand (Rounder)

3) Feist - The Reminder (Cherrytree)

4) Georgie James - Places (Saddle Creek)

5) Okkervil River - The Stage Names (Jagjaguwar)

6) Dr Dog - We All Belong (Park the Van)

7) Amy Winehouse - Back to Black (Virgin)

8) Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (Merge)

9) The Bird and the Bee - s/t (Metro Blue)

10) Detroit Cobras - Tried and True (Bloodshot)

Prettiest LP: the double LP by The Donnas - Bitchin' (beautiful creamy
purple vinyl)

Long live vinyl!

I really enjoyed 2007 - managed to get to the Dewey Beach Popfest and
the Boston-IPO. Hopefully I'll get to more this year!

Pop on!
John
