1. Sky Blue Sky â Wilco. It took some time before I really âheardâ this but it grew with each listen.
2. Goodbye â Ulrich Schnauss. A great album of electronic music (not dance/techno) with subtle analog textures and very clever compositions and arrangements. Not âpower popâ by any definition.
3. Pillowmaker â John Southworth
4. Traffic & Weather â Fountains of Wayne. No apologies, no caveats; I really like the album.
5. At My Age â Nick Lowe. Weâre close to the same age.
6. Ken Sharp â Sonic Crayons
7. Lost Album â Lewis Taylor
8. One Hit Wanderer â Henry Gross (not sure if this is truly 2007 or not)- wonderful layered guitar sounds.
9. Walk â Hanson
10. Atlas Dei â Robert Rich
11. Future Clouds and Radar â Future Clouds and Radar
12. A Year in the Wilderness â John Doe
13. 100 Days, 100 nights â Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
14. Sky Blue â Maria Schneider Orchestra
15. Block Ice & Propane â Erik Friedlander
16. Modern Minds and Pastimes â Click Five
17. The Cloud of Unknowing â James Blackshaw
18. Person Pitch â Panda Bear
19. Monsters of Grace â Philip Glass & Robert Wilson/Philip Glass Ensemble
20. Itâs Only Time â Drake Bell. Excellent songs and performances but recorded much too âhotâ and overly-compressed.
Most listened to in 2007: I bought a used CD by Nik Kershaw called 15 Minutes. I knew little to nothing about him beyond a vague recollection he was a synth-pop teen-type star in the UK some time ago. But for $2, what the heck? Since then I canât get this out of my player and am really impressed by the maturity of the songwriting and the lyrics but mostly by the great sonic textures of the guitars and the production sound. This has become one of my all-time favorite albums over the past 9 months. So I picked up some earlier albums by him and was disappointed; not good at all by my tastes.
Biggest disappointment of 2007 â Tracey Thorne solo CD left me cold and I kept trying to like it.
Biggest hope for 2008 â Brian Wilson â That Lucky Old Sun â is this going to be released as a studio album?
Thanks to all for these lists, I have found so many great musicians I would never have known on my own. Special thanks to those who discussed Chris Brown â Now That Youâve Been fed â on their 2006 lists; a great record that brings me much amusement.
