I'll chime in a little here as I have a 12-year-old daughter who is very heavily into music (apparently the nut really doesn't fall from the tree).

She has an mp3 player that she is loading up with a lot of 'tween stuff as well as some of Dad's discs.

As for the 'tween thing, she's into the Jonas Brothers, Aly & AJ, and she likes some of the Miley Cyrus stuff. Her current faves are Hawk Nelson and Relient K. Both are Christian-based pop bands and they seem to be fun and upbeat for her age group (or any group I guess). She also downloads tunes from walmart.com - but first my wife and I check out what she's interested in before giving the go-ahead. So far we haven't had to veto anything.

She's also dipped into my CD collection for some Monkees (a lot of Monkees), Kinks, and McCartney. She also asks me tons of questions about whatever album I happen to be playing at any particular time, but I try hard not to push or suggest that she put someone on her player. I want her to like what she likes, not what I might want her to like (for instance she has already expressed that she does not care for the Stones or Chuck Berry).

It's fun for me to see her so enthusiastic about music as well as forming her own tastes.
