2007 was a great year for music in my opinion. Anything in the top 50 could have made the top 20 on a given day. 1 The Broken West - I Can't Go On, I'll Go OnTop to bottom, I love all of these songs. 2 The Bird And The Bee - The Bird And The Bee3 The Frank & Walters - A Renewed Interest in HappinessI think this may be their best album. Certainly their edgiest. Some classic F&W sound, plus some great Johnny Cash-inspired stuff.http://www.myspace.com/thefrankandwalters 4 Darren Hanlon - Fingertips And MountaintopsFor fans of The Lucksmiths' lyrics and whimsical humor. In fact, he was the '4th Lucksmith' on one of their tours. More on the acoustic side.http://www.myspace.com/darrenhanlon 5 Fernando - Enter to ExitFernando Viciconte is a great songwriter, with shades of The Shins, Elliott Smith, The Lemonheads and George Harrison, sometimes with a Latin twist.http://www.fernandoviciconte.com/media.html http://cdbaby.com/cd/fernandov4 6 Lewis Taylor - The Lost Album7 The Pipettes - We Are The Pipettes8 Candie Payne - I Wish I Could Have Loved You More9 Amy Winehouse - Back to Black10 Patrick Cleandenim - Baby Comes HomeElements of Bacharach, The Association and jazz combined beautifully. http://www.myspace.com/patrickcleandenim 11 Future Clouds & Radar - Future Clouds & Radar12 Jarvis Cocker - The Jarvis Cocker Record13 Romantica - AmericaAmerican folk pop, Irish style, with a little Mexican flavor.14 The Long Blondes Someone To Drive You HomeU.K band that reminds me a bit of early Blondie. Lot of punk attitude combined with pop sensibility.http://www.myspace.com/thelongblondes 15 VHS Or Beta - Bring On The CometsTheir best record yet. Less disco, same great driving guitar sound. Singer still sounds like Robert Smith.http://www.vhsorbeta.com/ 16 Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?Grower of the year for me. I wish I had it longer before I saw them live. 17 The Shins - Wincing the Night Away18 Nushu - Nevermind LullabyeI dig Lisa Mychols even though she's out of her mind. 19 The Avett Brothers - EmotionalismBanjo-heavy mountain country/folk music from North Carolina. Great songs - the first five tracks are as strong as on any album this year.http://www.theavettbrothers.com/site.php?content=media 20 The National - Boxer------------------------21 Stars - In Our Bedroom After the WarProbably knocked out of my top 20 because 'The Night Starts Here' sounds like it was blatantly designed for use in a beer commercial. 22 Devon Sproule - Keep Your Silver ShinedSweet-voiced singer songwriter. Sort of a country version of Clare & the Reasons. Wait a minute... why didn't I get the Clare & the Reasons album?http://www.devonsproule.com/music.html http://cdbaby.com/cd/devonmusic3 23 Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - 100 Days 100 NightsMy concert experience of the year. 24 The Vinyl Skyway - From Telegraph HillFor fans of Cloud Eleven's Sweet Happy Life. http://cdbaby.com/cd/vinylskyway2 25 Adrian Bourgeois - s/tSomeone on audities mentioned him last year. His self-released album is very good, classic 60's/70's style pop songwriting.http://www.adrianbourgeois.com/index.cfm?CFID=67070645&CFTOKEN=4566365326 Hey Willpower P.D.A.27 Albert Hammond Jr Yours To Keep28 Richard X Heyman Actual Sighs29 Josh Rouse Country Mouse City House30 Jeremy Fisher Goodbye Blue MondayJeremy Fisher's music draws from Paul Simon, Bryan Adams & Josh Rouse. The song 'Cigarette' has the singalong chorus of the year.http://www.jeremyfishermusic.com/index.html#newsHomeCute video: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=2014348073 31 Pete Yorn Nightcrawler32 Apples in Stereo New Magnetic Wonder33 Mary Weiss Dangerous Game34 The Weakerthans Reunion Tour35 Ian Hunter Shrunken Heads36 Melody Club At Your Service37 Dean & Britta Back Numbers38 Kaiser Chiefs Yours Truly, Angry Mob39 Sugar & Gold Creme40 Rogue Wave Asleep At Heaven's Gate41 Sloan Never Hear The End Of It42 Feist The Reminder43 The Well Wishers How I won The War44 Buffalo Tom Three Easy Pieces45 Air Pocket Symphony46 Maria McKee Late December47 Cowboy Junkies At The End of Paths Taken48 CéU CéU49 Good, The Bad & The Queen The Good, The Bad & The Queen50 Fujiya Miyagi Transparent Things Purchased Very Late In 2007, Sound Promising:Minipop A New HopeAlison Moyet The TurnBrad Brooks Spill Collateral LoveThe Singles Start AgainThe A-Sides Silver StormsKate Havnevik MelanktonKelly Willis Translated From LoveDeborah Pardes Love & Discipline Disappointments:New PornographersBand of HorsesFountains Of Wayne Fave EP'S:Los Campesinos! Her best album since Tender City. She still has a great voice and songwriting chops. A lot of liberal-leaning political stuff here, if that's a problem. http://www.joyaskew.com/music.htm http://www.myspace.com/joyaskewThe FierosMagnetic FieldsDerek White & The Monophobics Damianthegeniusiwas@hotmail.com
