Here in my hometown in Brazil - which is quite humid and hot during most
of the year - we have a major problem with the cd's that have the silver
coating reaching the edges of the disc. Many of them simply 'rot'. Good
examples are the old Polygram cd's, also old versions of Bon Jovi,
Scorpions, The Sister Of Mercy, etc. In my own collection, I have a copy
of 'Fuzzy', by Grant Lee Buffalo, which is all lost. The black rotting,
which comes from the edges in a way very similar to what happens in
mirrrors, has reached the middle of the recorded part, and it doesn't
play anymore. Many european cd's from the early 90's were made that way
too. My The Cure's 'Entreat' is going the same way. That almost never
happens with the cd's that were manufactured later, that had the care of
having transparent plastic edges (both in the inside and outside edges
of the disc), but happens a lot with the silver edges.
I'm very disappointed to see that some American manufacturers took a big
step back regarding that problem. I just saw a few recent made US cd's
that went back to the old silver edges style. Wounded Bird cd's are made
almost that way, but the most impressive example I saw is the last
Nightwish 'Dark Passion Play' deluxe edition. A friend bought this very
cd just months ago and it's already rotting, with the black corrosion
clearly appearing at the edges. Incredible.
Does anyone face this same problem?
Rafael.
