1) Richard Hawley - lady's bridge
The guy is consistently brilliant. Songs springing forth per the
loss of his father. Lots of atmosphere and guitars. A unique talent.
2) John Southworth-The pillowmaker
This is quite a departure for him. Much more stripped down
musically but just brilliant. "Holy Mackerel" just floors me with
it's Spanish (?) sounding guitar and his voice complimenting it just
right. Maybe my surprise of the year.
3) Future Clouds and Radar
4) Spoon-ga,ga,ga
I see this has made several people's disappointment lists. I
really love it. I've never checked them out until this year. I guess
I've always been reluctant to check out bands named after kitchen
utensils or body parts (see #10 below). But come on nay sayers, are
you telling me "You got yr. Cherry bomb" doesn't just make you want
to just get up and dance!
5) The Clientele-God save the Clientele
Another great album from these guys. I liked their prior record
just a touch more but a very close race indeed.
6) New Pornographers=Challengers
7) Josh Rouse=Country Mouse, City House
This is a slight drop off for Josh. The so called "winter album".
Still, a very fine album overall.
8) Arcade Fire=Neon Bible
9) Jens Lenkman-Night Falls over Kortedala
10) The Shins-Wincing the night away
Like Spoon a band I never checked out until this year. Glad I
finally did. This may not be their best but I'm still digging through
their discs.
11) Nick Lowe-at my age
I missed both Mr. Lowe and Mr. Hawley this year in concert. Both
per other obligations. That is just so wrong.
12) Graham Parker=Don't tell Columbus
The lead off track "I discovered America" starts things off right.
13) The Ladybug Transistor-Can't wait another day
I loved many reissues this year.. (I'll just list a few off the top
of my head)
Tea and Symphony (comp)
John Stewart-California Bloodline
I remember this guy from way back but never checked him out. This is
the best "new to my ears" album of the year. My god what a great
album. I'm going to be digging deeper very soon.
Porter Wagoner -The Rubber Room
A collection of Porter's darker songs. Sometimes the pathos is so
thick you almost want to giggle. But still, a great blending of his
more troubling songs.
The Key-Fit me in
The Fickle Pickle
Best, Steve D.
