I'm one of those people who's always thought the subtext to "2000
Miles" was that the "he" who wasn't back at Christmastime was a
soldier killed in action -- remember, this first came out during a
spate of songs inspired by the Falklands war: Elvis Costello and
Robert Wyatt's "Shipbuilding," Billy Bragg's "Island of No Return,"
the Bluebells' "South Atlantic Way," that rather ghastly Pink Floyd
album. It's always been a terribly sad song, but for the last four
years, it's always hit me like a punch in the gut.
