While I was in graduate school at Northwestern, I switched over to the big,
zippered wallets so that I could save space in my VERY tiny studio apartment
in Evanston.
These suited my purposes for a while, but I soon found that there was a
pronounced disadvantage: the plastic sleeves often stuck to the surface of
the discs. As a result, when you removed them, they'd sometimes take the
labeling on the disc with them. More than a few of my discs from that era
bear the defacement of those plastic, inner sleeves.
When I got to a place that was big enough, I started buying slimline jewel
cases to replace the standard CD-sized ones that I'd discarded. These worked
out pretty well. I stored 'em on CD shelves that I'd bought at Target or
Best Buy or some such.
If you want to condense on space, I'd recommend going the slimline route.
I'd heavily advise against the wallet/binder model.
