Now you have me wanting to hear "Pet Soul" after reading that.Is it still available? I checked Amazon but nothing reasonable there.

Douglas Wilson" clearly refers to Brian, there is such a sincerity and earnestness in Brandt Huseman's vocal, and in the song's lyrics, that it just knocks me out every time I hear it. I always have to stop what I'm doing, and pause to enjoy the opening line. And later, when he repeats, "Never learned to say no..." a few times, and then "Surf's up again," followed by the backing vocals echoing that line, it seems damn close to perfection as the vocals and music blend. "Caroline Knows" evokes the same feeling.

It just wouldn't succeed if these songs didn't stand on their own merits, and in my opinion they do. For me (and I know this doesn't apply to everyone), it's nearly as good as anything their influences recorded.
