You make some interesting points, and I agree with you, which is perhaps the primary reason I connect so much with Splitsville's "Pet Soul."  While "The Love Songs of B. Douglas Wilson" clearly refers to Brian, there is such a sincerity and earnestness in Brandt Huseman's vocal, and in the song's lyrics, that it just knocks me out every time I hear it.  I always have to stop what I'm doing, and pause to enjoy the opening line.  And later, when he repeats, "Never learned to say no..." a few times, and then "Surf's up again," followed by the backing vocals echoing that line, it seems damn close to perfection as the vocals and music blend.  "Caroline Knows" evokes the same feeling.

Sure, the album contains plenty of '60s musical references, and the titles/lyrics clearly point to Brian (and The Beatles), but I'm always annoyed by people (and I'm not suggesting Adam is one of them) who criticize these recordings as a sort of '60s pop replica/tribute thing, as if the band doesn't deserve full credit for their work.  It just wouldn't succeed if these songs didn't stand on their own merits, and in my opinion they do.  For me (and I know this doesn't apply to everyone), it's nearly as good as anything their influences recorded.
