early Beach Boys?) nor Danny Hutton.. >>

Jan and Dean
(and by that, I actually mean Jan Berry)
is a most fascinating case indeed:

His earliest (meaning late Fifties!) records
actually inspired The Beach Boys,
not the other way around

(eg: listen to M. Love not war's bomp-bop's
on that very first BB release, "Surfin"
.....it's Jan from "Jennie Lee," "Baby Talk", etc.)

That all said,
the influence most definitely began running the other way
once Jan had met, befriended, and started writing and recording
("Surf City," for example) with Brian Wilson.

Tragically, three quick years later, Jan was out of action,
but not before starting to use the studio
in a VERY "Pet Sounds"/Spector way:

Who knows what the man would have/could have accomplished
had he been able to keep on arranging and producing
into 67, 68 and beyond ??

For much more info on Jan Berry,
including the up-coming tribute project
featuring many of our Auditing faves.......
