How come no one's mentioned Jack Casady?  He was a thoroughly  revolutionary 
bass player in the sixties and totally carried the Airplane, who  were no 
slouches instrumentally either.  Listen to the bass lines  throughout "Bless It's 
Pointed Little Head" "After Bathing at Baxters".   Now that's cool-ass bass!

PS:  The bass player in The Cheepskates was pretty good too though I  can't 
recall his name.  ;  )
