yes, the originals are wonderful in their own way, well deserving of 'classic' status.
He was into the smack at the time, or at least playing it up (using the mic cord to tie off on stage, black nail polish, white face, etc)

However, the musicianship was amazing. Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner really fired it up. 11 minutes of 'Heroin'? 15 minutes of 'Rock and Roll'? Bring it on. 

I don't think he even played a lick of guitar, just sang.
Lou's a nifty rhythm guitar player, by the way. Very under rated. 

But he's no Steve Vai (shaddup!)
