It's all about tracking. A turntable that doesn't track well, coupled
with a cheap cartridge/stylus will slowly damage the sides of the
vinyl grooves. Of course, that might not be readily apparent, and
could effectively take years.
But the immediate effect of a proper audio turntable (not a DJ one),
one that tracks correctly, is the better audio reproduction.
I've also used many turntables over the years, most of them favoured
by DJs, including Technics, but now I'm much happier with a Rega.
