So there I was this morning reading the third hefty Rolling Stone mag
lauding their 40th anniversary (thank you library system) tsk-tsking
throughout at, well, many things, when bam I saw an ad for Target's
new BOWIE collection by KEENAN DUFFTY (who he? thought I.)
Holy moly! The lightning bolt tshirt caught my eye. So I proceed to
look up Keenan (who was in bands Sordid Details & Wonder Stories and
his latest appears to be Slinky Vagabond) details from his myspace
page below. That "glitterbug" song rawks.
On the page you can also see the collection, alas for men, all great
but imho that puffy black vest is noxious.
Not quite pop I know, but fun stuff.
regards, Judith
Keanan Duffty is a musician and award-winning British fashion designer
based in New York. Duffty believes that music and fashion go hand in
hand. He was a founding member of the British Punk band Sordid
Details, formed in 1978 (when Keanan was 14 years old). Sordid Details
were heavily influenced by the Sex Pistols, for whom Duffty designed
stage clothes in 2003.
In 1980 Keanan formed Wonder Stories, a New Romantic group influenced
by David Bowie and Roxy Music. Their live shows gained good reviews in
the Sounds music paper and support from Radio 1 DJ Peter Powell.
Wonder Stories played gigs during 1980 and 1981. By 1982 Duffty had
chosen to study fashion design at St. Martin's School Of Art. In
London, Keanan worked at PX, the New Romantic boutique and former
stomping ground of the fabulous DJ Princess Julia and Visage front man
Steve Strange.
In 1983 Duffty found an experienced music business manager, Falcon
Stuart (former manager of Adam & The Ants and X Ray Spex). Stuart
encouraged Duffty to record demos for EMI, ZTT and MCA records,
eventually releasing a 12" dance mix of 'Water Sport' on Falcon
Stuart's Awesome Records label (AOR4). Duffty recorded a 4 song
session at BBC's Maida Vale Studios for Radio 1 DJ Janice Long. 'Water
Sport' was record of the week in Smash Hits, received good reviews in
the British music press, and became an underground club hit in the UK.
Duffty played shows in London including the ID Magazine Fifth
anniversary party at the ICA. Duffty graduated from St. Martins in
1986. His graduation collection earned him a Bachelor Of Arts First
Class Honors degree in fashion.
