I should add a caveat:
 
Many artsists are clearly better live than on record (Yo La Tengo is my
favorite example of that), but the greatness of the concert is often
because, due to the nature of a PA system and the adrenaline of the 
moment, the imperfect moments that just plain don't work on repeated 
listens either don't register or are actually exciting on the one initial listen.
 
I hope most of us can agree that there is a vast difference between music
that sounds great on one listen and music that sounds great after 20 listens.
Some music, of course, can be both...
