I read the debate about technical skill vs. attitude with a lot of interest...

I enjoy both, and to me where things break down is where a band's reach exceeds its grasp.? One of my pet peeves -- and the power pop world is definitely NOT immune to this phenomenon (nor have I been in my own career, frankly) -- is where you get a band up onstage or on record that has a vision in its head of a certain arrangement or idea and they only get halfway there.? They simply don't have the chops or the rehearsal time or the understanding of how they're coming across to the audience to do what they're trying to do.

Bands such as these may well be filled with technically proficient, or at least halfway decent, musicians, but I'd much rather hear them do a dumb rock 'n' roll tune that they can pull off with energy than some half-baked idea that they can't execute properly.

Technique versus rock credentials?
