I'm not a big Joy Division fan, but the new movie on Ian Curtis sounded interesting, so I saw it this afternoon. It's quite good, and Sam Riley, IMHO, really nailed Ian Curtis. It's one of those rare "rock" movies where the focus is more on the people than the music. Filming the movie in black and white seems to help capture the bleakness of Northwest England at that time and sets the stage for the tragic events about to unfold. What I really liked the most about it is that Ian is not portrayed as this misunderstood artist who died before his time, but as working class guy who was just too young to handle marriage, parenthood, fame, adultery and illness.
