Funny, but I can't listen to John Mayer at all.
The guy's been recording for almost 20 years and his latest (Some Mad Hope) really shows the evolution of an artist, in my opinion. The songs are better thought out and the production, instrumentation and "finish" are definitely the best he's every put out. So if you are judging on his early indie efforts you are missing out on some great songs.
He does really try hard to break down the barrier between artist and audience with funny in-between song banter and stories. The guy even takes the odd request shouted out from the audience. He sticks around after the show and chats with people at the merch table and appears to be a genuinely warm and funny person.

You know, I've seen him live and just sort of thought "John Mayer Lite."
The singer-songwriter thing has never been my cup of tea, though.
His between song banter is funny, I'll give him that, but the songwriting is
underwhelming.
