The Monkees BECAME a real band...I know...I was there and watched them do it.
Too bad they got bounced off of am radio just as they were getting really good.
The Bill Drake programming people tossed their records when the show was canceled.
  Idiots.

I would think a lot. One could say the songs were derivitive, ok, but they were still great and hugely popular. The whole TV/Music connection, while hinted at with Rick Nelson, and The Beatles on Ed Sullivan really gets exploited here. Whether or not that's a good thing is not the issue here. It's one of the things that makes them historically important.

Indeed - I totally agree with you, but dunno if they'll get in, cause it's hip for "real rockers" to discount them as Milli Vanilli types, but that's just plain ignorant. There was a ton of talent there, and many great songs, both while & after they were Kirshner's puppets. And their influence was tremendous.

I saw Stevie Wonder perform an amazing, nearly 3 hour outdoor show in Baltimore a couple of weeks ago. He has an extremely impressive voice (esp. for his age), and the crowd totally adored him. He was so excited during "Do I Do" that he actually climbed up and stood on top of his piano, singing joyfully & clapping along with the crowd. When he first got up, a couple of band members looked very nervous as they gently nudged his feet to keep him away from the edge!

Many thanks to whoever posted the link to the Brian Wilson show in London (Mike Bennett?), performing "That Lucky Old Sun." Really fun to check it out.

Finally, if you're in the Baltimore area this weekend, go see Splitsville. It doesn't happen often enough these days...

Be seeing you,
Bill
