Again, this is based only on one listen, in a very emotional
environment, but I would say Wilson definitely *is* breaking new
ground in That Lucky Old Sun, in that it feels like the logical next
step *from* Smile. While it's still made up of individual songs, it's
more tightly integrated - the whole thing is played right through
without any pause other than for a few seconds before Midnight's
Another Day. And while Mexican Girl is not groundbreaking in an
absolute sense - it sounds like stuff other people have done before -
it's nothing like anything Wilson had done before.
Basically, imagine it's late 1967, and the finished Smile that came
out in 2004 had been released. This is much like what you'd expect the
next album to have been...
