I allowed this to happen to me just the other night. We had preview
tickets to "In the Valley of Elah". The advance critic notices I read
were calling it a masterpiece. One reviewer stated something like it
has the emotional impact of THE DEER HUNTER and the plot worthy of
CHINATOWN. That had me interested. I admit I went in with very HIGH
expectations but to me while it could have been a great movie, it's
merely a good per moments that feel flawed. The best thing in the
movie is Tommy Lee Jones. It's a great performance and to me (and my
wife) his character seems to be the only one really fleshed out...but
I digress. The point being I bought the hype and ended up feeling
slightly disappointed in a good movie with point of view I tend to
agree with. Oh, and it's has a very slow, quiet pace to it, almost
depressed feel...which I'm actually a sucker for...so you are warned.
Back to music. I think people missed the point. You ARE SUPPOSE to
LOVE Scott Walker!
:)
Actually, I love Walker's music but I can totally see why it might
not be other's cup of tea. In fact, my wife doesn't get his music,
other friends that I thought might like it, don't. So there you go.
This is a big FWIW but...Regarding the Walker film. On the Walker
list they all rave about it. I was dubbed a DVD of a British show
that has outtakes from it. Looks very good. They interview Bowie,
Richard Hawley, Jarvis Crocker, many others. Some new clips from the
early days and yes naturally some of his recent "pounding on sides of
beef" style of music (as oposed to the salad days?). Anyway, I'm
looking forward to seeing it....
Babble off,
Steve D
