Hey Robert--
Madrid has probably one of the best stores for powerpop in the
world--Escridiscos. It's right in the center of town, near the Callao
metro stop in between the Plaza del Sol and Gran Via. Pepe has been
selling power pop (as well as alt.country, and 50's and 60's stuff too)
for over 20 years. Tell them Seth Mocker said hola!
Not sure if anything is going on next those days (hey Rafa! anyone
playing?). Check Wurlitzer Ballroom (also near Gran Via because they
often have power pop bands (we played there on our last tour), Moby
Dick, El Sol. Last July I saw the Cynics and Paul Collins in one week,
so sometimes you can get lucky. There are also a bunch of cool Spanish
pop bands. Rock Indiana (the Spanish pop label) has shows
periodically. If I get any emails I'll let you know.
And if no-one is playing, just head out to Malasaña (a neighborhood
north of Gran Via). There are literally dozens of bars playing Audities
greatest hits and misses (plus the best country, garage, surf, punk, you
name it) almost every night until late. My faves are Moloko, La Vaca
Austera, La Via Lactea. And Borja Ex-Winnery djs and bartends a lot of
the time at another Malasaña bar called Tupperware. Wurlitzer is also
great for just listening to djs.
If I hear anything else I'll let you know. Feel free to email me if you
want anymore info. I'd also be glad to give you the email addresses of
a few friends.
Have fun (I KNOW you will!)--
Seth
