My best guess for the mystery song is "It's My Day" by Carl Strommen.
Strommen composes a lot of school choir music, and some of his other pop songs are
in a similar vein. But I can't find a sample of anybody doing "It's My
Day".
Perhaps an email to his publisher would turn up something. alfred.com
He's also teaching at C.W. Post (part of Long Island University), if anybody
has a connection there. Can't find an email address for him.

Armed with this new info from Gary, I tried to do a search for the song's
lyrics and hit dead ends. However, this morning I finally got the phone number
for the swing choir's director and called him. A very weird experience for him
I'm sure...had to explain the story of the reel, etc.
Ran the lyrics by him and asked him if "It's My Day" made sense as the song.
and he thinks it very well might be. Will be sending him the cd of the
concert so he can confirm his memory. After all, that's 35 years ago!
If that's what it is, Gary will be the winner, because without his guess I
don't think I would have got this far. So I'll post when I get an awn ser..
By the way, the high school was Brookings Harbor High, a small school in
Brookings, Oregon.
And thanks to everyone who checked in with this...I really thought it was
more of a pop song to identify, since everything else in the concert was.
Knowing it might well be just a SATB choral thing, that was making it a nearly
impossible task!
