Scott,

Durham ustill suffers from snotty rich Duke kids not needing cash
from trade-ins. I was back in the Triangle in May, and one store I
was hoping to shop was Radio Free Records, which used to be here
in San Jose, but Ethan the owner pulled up stakes and headed to the
right coast in 2000. But damnit, he closed it a few years ago :(

I did find one Durham independent called BullCity Records which is
well worth the visit. Near Duke's east campus off Broad St.

But if you're serious then drive 15 miles on 15/501 to Chapel Hill:

1) CD Alley @ 405 W. Franklin. Hole in the wall store with loads of
choice at good prices. High volume from the nearby Carolina campus.

2) Schoolkids @ 144 E Franklin across from the Carolina campus. They
also have a store near NC State in Raleigh.
