Essential Andrew Gold albums? All of them. If you've already got "Whirlwind" then definately pick up his first three albums before that; "Andrew Gold", "What's Wrong With This Picture" and "All This And Heaven Too". Strong songwriting and great arrangements.

"Whirlwind" is the rockiest of his first four albums. Maybe "edgier" would be a better description as the previous three also have some really fantastic uptempo songs with punch. His ballads are really emotional songs that stick with you. Extremely well done and deserved more recognition back in the seventies.

"The Fraternal Order Of The All" is worth searching out as Andrew really nails so many of his sixties influences. A really fun album.

His later albums like "...Since 1951" are filled with wonderful songs like; "The King Of Showbiz", "First Time In Love", "Can Anybody See You" and "Can't Get Used To Losing You" which was an old Andy Williams hit that gives Andrew a duet with his boss - Linda Rondstadt. :=)

I love "The Spence Manor Suite". Great songs from beginning to finish. Gary Burr sings on "Hypothetically" which most Beatle fans will pick up on as an homage to "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party". It's a like a song that could have been on Utopia's "Face The Music" or Neil Innes reworking a Beatles song for The Rutles. Andrew singing to a police officer and later a judge in his song "Love Made Me Do It" is such a musical treat. If you're not a fan of country music or the rootsier sounds of country (think "Brother Where Art Thou") - you may not care for this album. If you do appreciate the different genres that do flow out of Nashville - then don't hesitate to pick this album up. Definately get his earlier work before getting this album or you might be thrown off as to what this talented artist and craftsman can do and miss out on an incredible body of musical output.
