Well, I'm looking at their AMG bio now and this band has been together
for coming up on ten years (and this is their fourth album), so I
think a big part of the issue is that she's neither as young or as
inexperienced as you thought. (Incidentally, the band's website
claims she's won several songwriting competitions, so there you go.)

Yeah, but "industry" is the key word here. I'm scrolling through
their Google cache right now, and as far as I can tell, all of their
albums have been released on their own label with distro by The
Orchard, and I see none of the tell-tale signs that they're being
secretly bankrolled by a major. Ghost songwriters cost big money, and
I'm not seeing any big money behind this band yet.
